Michigan State was shaken when forward Kyle Ahrens was taken from the court on a stretcher with an injury to his left ankle in the first half of the Big Ten tournament final.
The No. 6 Spartans perked up when Ahrens returned courtside as a spectator, and they rallied to defeat No. 10 Michigan, 65-60, on Sunday in Chicago.
Matt McQuaid scored a career-high 27 points, and Cassius Winston converted the go-ahead layup in the closing minute for Michigan State (28-6), which came back from a 13-point deficit in the second half and scored the game’s final 10 points.
Ahrens, averaging 4.8 points a game, said he was relieved X-rays showed the ankle was not broken, but the extent of the injury was not clear.
Ahrens landed awkwardly when he collided in midair with his teammate Kenny Goins going for a rebound with 4 minutes 34 seconds left in the first half. An air cast was placed on Ahrens’s leg, and teammates gave him hugs before he was wheeled away, pounding his chest.
“He thought his career was over,” said Coach Tom Izzo, adding, “It was one of those times that you don’t forget in your coaching career.”
Ahrens returned to the sideline on crutches with about 14 minutes in the second half. The crowd greeted him with loud cheers, and Michigan State began its rally shortly after.
Michigan led by 13 early in the second half, but Michigan State went on a 13-4 run to tie it at 48-48 with a little more than seven minutes remaining.
The Wolverines were ahead by 60-55 after Isaiah Livers hit a 3-pointer with 2:29 left. But McQuaid answered with one of his own to start the game-ending run.
The Spartans prevented a championship three-peat by Michigan and beat their rival for the third time this season. It was their sixth Big Ten tournament title, more than any other team.
SOUTHEASTERN Bryce Brown scored 19 points to lead Auburn to its first conference tournament championship since 1985 in an 84-64 rout of eighth-ranked Tennessee in Nashville.
No. 22 Auburn (26-9) had not played in the final since 2000, and the fifth-seeded Tigers won their fourth game in four days to capture only their second tournament title. Auburn enters the N.C.A.A. tournament having won eight straight and 10 of their last 11.
Better yet, Auburn and Coach Bruce Pearl have become the nemesis to his old program, beating Tennessee three straight times. Auburn ruined Tennessee’s hopes of winning back-to-back SEC regular-season titles for the first time with an 84-80 win to wrap up the regular season a week ago, and the Tigers are also the last team to have beaten Tennessee in Knoxville.
Lamonte Turner had 24 points for the Vols (29-5), who entered the game with a chance at the program’s first-ever No. 1 N.C.A.A. seeding. They ended up being seeded No. 2 in the South Region.
ATLANTIC 10 St. Louis (23-12) rallied from a 15-point, first-half deficit, locking down St. Bonaventure (18-16) in the second half for a 55-53 victory at Barclays Center.
The sixth-seeded Billikens won four games in four days to earn their first A-10 tournament title since 2013 and their first N.C.A.A. tournament berth since 2014.
Bonnies guard Nelson Kaputo, who played only the final minute, had an open 3-point shot from the corner in the final seconds after a scramble, but it bounced off the back of the rim, and the Billikens cleared the rebound as time expired.
Jordan Goodwin had 16 points and 14 rebounds for St. Louis, and Tramaine Isabell made a key 3, starting a 12-0 run that put the Billikens in the lead to stay.
Courtney Stockard led the fourth-seeded Bonnies with 22 points but fouled out in the final minute.
AMERICAN Jarron Cumberland had 33 points and 8 rebounds to lead No. 24 Cincinnati past No. 11 Houston, 69-57, for the championship of the American Athletic Conference in Memphis.
It was the second straight conference tournament title for the Bearcats (28-6), who defeated Houston in last year’s final.
Armoni Brooks led Houston (31-3), the conference tournament’s top seed, with 17 points.
IVY LEAGUE Alex Copeland scored a season-high 25 points, and Yale beat its archrival Harvard, 97-85, in New Haven for the tournament title.
Yale (22-7), which lost to Harvard (18-11) twice in the regular season, used a 15-0 burst in the second half to take control. The Bulldogs will return to the N.C.A.A. tournament for the first time since a memorable run in 2016, when they beat Baylor and then played Duke tough in a 71-64 loss.
Bryce Aiken scored 38 points for Harvard.
SUN BELT Malik Benlevi hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points, and Georgia State (24-9) advanced to a second straight N.C.A.A. tournament with a 73-64 victory against Texas-Arlington (17-16) in New Orleans. The Panthers, who also defeated the Mavericks in the conference final last year, will making their fifth N.C.A.A tournament appearance.B:
